Visit Sandwell Prepares for the Global Spotlight of the Commonwealth Games

Categories: Our News

Visit Sandwell is ready to maximise its potential as one of the hosts of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games following the recent launch of its new Tourism Pro site.

The site, will be a key tool in the DMO’s armoury to showcase both Sandwell and the West Midlands on a global stage, before, during and after the Games.

Currently most of the destination’s overnight guests are local residents and their family and friends.  The project forms part of the wider visitor economy strategy to improve the perception of Sandwell and raise its profile.

The site has also been developed in response to the Covid pandemic to allow the destination to reconnect with its local residents by keeping them informed and updated on events, the area’s history and things to see and do.

Sandwell is not only renowned for its industrial heritage but also its award-winning parks and green spaces.  With around 195 buildings and structures of special architectural or historic interest, it includes some of the most important historic buildings in the West Midlands.

The site promotes the destination’s lively events program in the run up to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games when the newly-built, state-of-the-art Aquatic Centre will host the swimming, Para swimming and diving events.  The 5000-seat centre took two weeks to fill with 1.2 million gallons of water and more than 190,000 tiles have been used during its build.

Visit Sandwell opted for the Tourism Pro solution from Simpleview due to its flexibility and have taken full advantage by adding optional extras such as the events form, book now button and an integration with Culture Host which delivers real-time What’s On data for the destination’s digital assets (venues, events and activities) via an API.

Councillor Laura Rollins, Sandwell’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism said: "The new Visit Sandwell website will allow local people and those from much further afield to find out about all the great attractions and exciting events that happen throughout the borough.  With Sandwell hosting the swimming and diving events at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, this is a perfect time to launch when the eyes of the world are on us."

The project follows an initiative by Visit Birmingham earlier in the year to implement a range of enhancements to its Visit and Meet websites in preparation for Birmingham 2022.
