Despite the current travel restrictions, our SEO clients’ sites are generally performing well in terms of visitor traffic, boosted by some additional keyword research, SEO optimisations, and content expansions to adapt to the current environment and help to maintain momentum and as a result, many have stayed in positive territory, even during lockdown.  

Obviously, events related activity has decreased significantly but we’re still seeing plenty of evidence of site visitors looking for socially distanced activities, particularly outdoors, that they can do within their destination’s current guidelines, or forward planning for the future once the restrictions are lifted.  People looking for inspiration for breaks later in the year and searches for seasonal related keywords for Spring and Summer are also evident as planning starts for better times ahead.  

It will be no surprise that rural areas are generally performing better than cities.  However, cities can still benefit by creating ideas for day trips to neighbouring rural areas (once the restrictions are reduced/lifted).  Virtual tours for attractions such as art galleries, heritage sites, gardens and stately homes are also proving popular as people look for a distraction and plan for the future.

The traffic volumes that our SEO team is witnessing do show evidence of a huge pent-up demand in travel and tourism and our DMOs need to be prepared to welcome back visitors, possibly more domestic in the initial phases but extending to international once the vaccination program starts to make serious inroads.  One thing is for sure, the industry will recover and rebound so it’s more important than ever to keep front of mind and adopt agile marketing strategies which are capable of keeping visitors engaged and adapting to both changes in behaviour and the environment.
