New Google Maps Billing β How to Mitigate Charges
14th June 2018

Most of our clients will already be aware of Google's announcement that they are changing the pricing model for the Google Maps API platform.
Until recently, the daily limit to qualify for free access has been 25,000 map requests per day. None of our clients have ever broken this threshold as the busiest sites generate between 5-6K map requests per day. However the new model now means that anything over 28,000 per month (approx 900 per day) will now be chargeable. The charge is $7 per 1000 over the free threshold, so a DMO with average visitor numbers could be paying hundreds of pounds per month in map usage alone.
New Mind | tellUs has developed a solution to help reduce map usage and keep costs down.
To mitigate the impact of the changes we are about to release an upgrade to our system that enables us to make map access on provider pages request only. This new development should reduce the majority of our DMOs' usage to well below the threshold and help to minimise any charges.
If you are interested in implementing the new functionality, please contact your Account Manager. If you haven’t already done so, you will need to create a Google Developer Account and generate a new Google Maps API key to take full advantage of the 28,000 free usage limit. The deadline is the 16th July so please make sure you do it in time.
If you have any queries, don't hesitate to contact your Account Manager.
