New Mind | tellUs clients achieved a record numbers of visitors to their sites during May, helped by some great weather and a proactive approach to SEO. 

Google's continuing disruption of the travel search market, combined with the extreme weather conditions experienced in the UK at the beginning of the year have had an adverse effect on traffic volumes to some of our destination websites.

However, over the last six months we have introduced a series of platform improvements, designed to help Google to more efficiently index the content on our tourism websites.  This all came to fruition in May, combined with some great weather, a couple of bank holidays and of course, the royal wedding, all helping to boost visitor numbers significantly and ultimately bookings.

On the bank holiday, Monday 28th May, our sites generated a total of 584,000 user sessions, an all-time record for a single day, breaking our previous record of 544,000 user sessions, achieved during the 2017 August bank holiday.  Here's a selection of some of the highlights from the month:

  • Visit Peak District - 12,000 user sessions on one day of the first May Bank Holiday - an all-time record for that site
  • Visit South East England - 18,000 user sessions on the bank holiday Monday of the same weekend (approx.4 times their normal traffic)
  • Ras Al Khaimah - peaked at 84,374 user sessions on 30th May (boosted by their own paid advertising activities)
  • Visit Windsor - a huge spike in traffic of 42,857 user sessions generated during the Royal Wedding, a record for any of our clients' events
  • Visit Liverpool - a 32% increase in traffic compared to May 17 
  • Visit Manchester - performing better now than at any point since the site went live in December 2016
  • Visit Bergen - 17% increase in users sessions compared to May 17
  • Fjord Norway - 31% increase in users sessions compared to May 17

Whilst there will always be factors which are beyond your control, there is a common thread running through all of the examples highlighted above.   Destinations that deploy a strategy of continually publishing engaging content, complemented by expert SEO support will reap the benefits.
