Introducing Svalbard, the Realm of the Polar Bear

A contingent from New Mind |tellUs has just returned from a fact finding mission to Svalbard, one of the world's northern most inhabited areas, after securing a contract to develop a new destination site for this fascinating Norwegian archipelago.

Svalbard is located at 78 degrees north in the Arctic ocean, half way between mainland Norway and the North Pole.  Although its name is translated as 'cold coasts', it has a relatively mild climate compared to other areas on the same latitude.  During the dark season (end of October to mid Feb) there's no daylight 24/7, attracting people from all over the world to experience the unique northern lights of the High Arctic, even in the middle of the day. As well as a few thousand polar bears, Svalbard is home to a population of almost 3000.

Visit Svalbard's new website will promote an untouched arctic wilderness populated by unique wildlife within a setting which is both rugged and fragile in equal measures.  Whaling and trapping were key industries in the regions past but sustainability is now Svalbard's guiding principle, with two thirds of its surface protected and now home to several nature reserves, national parks and bird sanctuaries.  The site will include a focus on Svalbard's food and drink culture, offering visitors everything from polar sushi experiences to locally brewed beer.  A tribute to Svalbard's main commercial activity, coal mining will also be featured, with information on tours of coal mines and themed accommodation including authentic coal miners cabins.

A clean, crisp design will reflect Svalbard's stark and eerie beauty, complemented by spectacular imagery of the destination's wildlife, landscapes, people and attractions.

Linn Blekkerud, Marketing Manager at Visit Svalbard comments: "Visit Svalbard has enjoyed a great relationship with New Mind | tellUs since using their DMS. We are absolutely confident that they will help us to develop a great new website for Svalbard, that will take care of all of our needs. The company's extensive experience of creating destination websites was the main reason for our choice of partner and we’re looking forward to seeing the final result later in the year. "
